Flatbush is a community of the Borough of Brooklyn, a part of New York City, consisting of several neighborhoods.

The Flatbush communities have traditionally had diverse populations, including large communities of ethnic Italians, as well as Jews. Today, it is a neighborhood in transition. It has suffered wrenching changes that saw its demographics shift radically between the 1970 and 1980 census counts.

From a population that was heavily Jewish and white in 1970 - 89 percent of the neighborhood was white and 11 percent nonwhite - Flatbush in 1980 was 30 percent white, 50 percent black, 7 percent Asian and 13 percent Hispanic. Read more
